Tok to Valdez
6-01-06
We had a great time last night at the Sourdough Campground about 1.5 miles outside Tok heading toward Anchorage. They had stew or chili in a bread bowl, pie and coffee for dinner then a little show then we all tried to toss a sourdough pancake into a buckit (that is how it is written on the side of the bucket) from about 20 feet. We each had two chances then he would give you a pancake in the shape of an animal and you could toss again if your first two missed. My third toss was a salmon and it went in!! So I got free breakfast this morning. It was all you can eat sourdough pancakes, watermelon, honeydew, canteloupe, grapes, pears, peaches and reindeer (really cariboo) sausage which was delicious. Breakfast was not served until 8 am so we were not on the road until 8:45. About 45 miles out of Tok they are totally rebuilding the road which means they took it down about 10 feet and then will build it back up. The traffic was one way with a pilot car for several miles. There was other construction here and there and the usual dips where the permafrost has heaved up the road. Also there are patches of blacktop for about 100 to 1000 feet then a patch of gravel with pot holes and washboards for about 50 feet. Needless to say it took a while to go the 250 miles to Valdez. We arrived at 4:15 and made several stops along the way. After we got to Glennallen, the road improved greatly. We stopped by the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Visitor Center and toured their information room. We wanted to make sure the Copper Center for the old copper mine would be open on Saturday in case we stay two days here in Valdez. Driving the last 100 miles has been absolutely beautiful. Looks like the Alps in Switzerland with waterfalls, glaciers and snow everywhere - except on the road, thank goodness!! The sun was out - our Lord has blessed us on this trip wherever we go with weather, beauty and safety. We saw three BIG moose today. Two were off in a field standing knee deep in a marsh eating away. The third was close to the road, but as soon as you slow down the vehicle, they run off. Guess the people do a lot of hunting from their cars around here. I don't think it is time for their antlers yet - at least we haven't seen any. Will check on that when we get to Denali. Last night my connection was very slow and I had trouble adding pictures. So tonight I will try to add a couple more from Haines along with some from today. Will post this then try to add the pictures separately.
